The History of the Traditional Dashiki

Picture2 Dashikis for $30
Anyone who thinks a dashiki is simply a T-shirt couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, it’s much more ornate than an ordinary T-shirt. A traditional, loose-fitting garment, with a V-neckline, often embroidered, the dashiki is usually worn by men, although it can be worn by women too – either casually, or as a dress shirt.
The everyday dashiki features little or no embroidery, while the high-end, formal dress shirts are normally manufactured from silk brocade and can be adorned with intricate embroidery on the cuffs and around the neckline.

The history of the dashiki
The dashiki has a rich history, and originates as a West African fashion. At one time, it was a shirt that covered the entire chest and it was equally popular in a longer version, the grand boubou. It wasn’t simply a fashion statement. It was loose-fitting and the fabric light enough to be suitable attire for wearing in the sun and intense heat, so suited the West African climate well. Brocade fabric is ideally suited for this!

The dashiki made the transition to American culture during the 1960s, when it became a symbol of affirmation to the struggles of African Americans in the USA at that time. It was first manufactured in Harlem during that era. Now, the dashiki is popular all over the USA.

Traditional print dashikis
Today, you will see dashikis featuring in popular culture all over the world. They are worn in films, mentioned in books and worn by celebrities across the globe. Many stars have worn print dashikis for press appearances, including Stevie Wonder and Sammy Davis Jr. If you’ve watched the Disney film, Enchanted, you’ll even see a dashiki being worn during a musical number!

The garment is worn today for modern Kwanzaa celebrations and is particularly popular during Black History Month every February, when it’s a time for West Africans to celebrate their heritage.

Why do people love dashikis?
Apart from the amazing comfort of the garment, it’s also fun to wear and it’s ideal for hot, humid weather due to its loose fit. The size and shape of the garment means anyone can wear it, no matter what their shape or size.

Whether you’re reconnecting with your heritage, going for a vintage look, staying cool on a hot day, or simply love wearing African clothing, the dashiki is a great choice for everyone.

Throwing a dinner party or having guests for a special event? Improve your party hosting skills with three quick and easy ways to set a table.
Setting the table is often a hurried, last-minute task that can leave you wondering about the correct placement of the flatware, plates, napkins and glassware.

Don't add stress to your dinner plans, and keep the focus on the food, your family and friends, with these super easy table setting ideas.
Picture
Basic Table Setting

This setting is appropriate for most occasions, and you just add to the basic pieces as needed.
The dinner plate is positioned in the center of the place setting and everything else is placed around it. Then, the flatware is arranged around the plate in the order in which it will be used:
  • To the left of the plate is the fork.
  • To the right of the plate is the knife and spoon. The knife is placed to the right of the plate with the sharp edge toward the plate. To the right of the knife is the spoon.
  • A water glass goes above the knife.
Napkins can be placed under the forks or on the plate for an informal setting.

Informal Dinner or Luncheon Table Setting
Simply start with a Basic Setting and add to it with these items:
  • If a salad is to be served, the salad fork is placed to the left of the dinner fork. Eliminate the salad fork if no salad is served or place it to the right of the dinner fork to use as a dessert fork if appropriate. (The dessert fork can also be brought to the table when dessert is served.)
  • If soup is served, set the bowl on the plate and a soup spoon to the right of the beverage spoon.
  • Salad or bread and butter plates go to the left of the forks. Position butter plates above the forks with the butter spreader placed across the plate.
  • Cup and saucer go above the spoons with the handle toward the right. Wine or water glasses can be positioned to the left of the coffee cup.
Picture
Formal Dinner Table Setting
Begin with the setting for an informal dinner or luncheon and add to it using the following ideas:
  • White and red wine glasses (if necessary) along with the water glasses are positioned to the left of the coffee cup.
  • The beverage, soup and/or dessert spoons are to the right of the knife or can be brought to the table when soup or dessert is served.
  • To dress it up more, place a charger under the dinner plate.
Start with a basic setting to dress up the table and set a casual mood for your dinner party or  any gathering. For a more formal setting, add more pieces by bringing additional plates, silverware, glasses and other serving pieces to the table as outlined below.
